Laser Welder FAQ

The 20 most common questions about handheld laser welding machines, answered honestly.

How much does a laser welder cost?
Prices range from $3,500 for a basic 1000W unit to $9,500 for a 3000W industrial system. Factory-direct Chinese units typically cost $5,000-$7,000 for a 1500W-2000W machine delivered to your door (DDP). Compare this to $30,000+ for an IPG LightWELD.
Is laser welding safe?
Laser welding uses Class 4 lasers, which can cause permanent eye damage in milliseconds. You MUST wear proper 1064nm OD6+ safety glasses, enclose the work area, and never point the beam at reflective surfaces. With proper precautions, it is as safe as any other welding method.
Can a laser welder cut metal?
Yes, most handheld laser welders can also cut thin metal (1-2mm) when equipped with a cutting nozzle. The "3-in-1" machines can weld, cut, and clean. However, they are not as fast as dedicated laser cutting machines for production cutting.
What is the difference between 1500W and 2000W?
1500W is ideal for welding up to 3-4mm steel and 2-3mm aluminum. 2000W can handle thicker materials (up to 5mm steel) and is better for production environments where you need higher speed. If you mostly work with thin sheet metal, 1500W is sufficient.
Do I need a water chiller?
Water-cooled machines (2000W+) require a chiller included in the system. Air-cooled machines (typically 1500W) have internal fans and do not need external cooling. Water-cooled systems have higher duty cycles but require more maintenance.
What is "wobble" welding?
Wobble is a circular oscillation of the laser beam that creates wider weld seams, better gap bridging, and smoother appearance. Most modern handheld welders have adjustable wobble width (0.5-3mm) and frequency (50-300Hz). It is the secret to clean, TIG-like welds.
Can I weld aluminum with a fiber laser?
Yes, but it requires specific settings. Aluminum reflects 1064nm light, so you need higher power (1500W+), slower speed, and clean surfaces. Using argon gas and a wobble pattern of 2-3mm helps prevent porosity. See our Aluminum Guide for detailed parameters.
What gas should I use?
For steel and stainless steel: Nitrogen or Argon (15-20L/min). For aluminum: Pure Argon (20-25L/min). Nitrogen is cheaper and works well for most applications. Argon produces cleaner welds on aluminum and stainless.
How long do consumables last?
Protective lens covers last 1-3 months (cost ~$5 each). Welding nozzles last 6-12 months (~$20). The laser source itself (Max, Raycus) is rated for 100,000 hours - essentially the lifetime of the machine with proper care.
Is Chinese equipment reliable?
The quality varies by manufacturer. Top-tier Chinese factories use the same core components (Max laser, Sup20s head, WSX optics) as rebranded Western units. The key is to choose a reputable factory with proper QC. We can recommend vetted suppliers.
What voltage do I need?
1500W air-cooled units typically run on 220V single-phase (available worldwide). 2000W+ water-cooled systems may require 380V three-phase in some configurations. Always confirm voltage compatibility with your local power supply.
How long does shipping take?
Air freight: 7-10 days. Sea freight: 30-45 days. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) includes customs clearance. Most factories offer both options. Air is faster but costs ~$500-1000 more.
Do I need special training?
Basic operation can be learned in 1-2 hours. Most factories provide online video training and parameter sheets. Unlike TIG, you don't need years of practice - the wobble function makes it easy to get good welds quickly.
Can I weld galvanized steel?
Yes, but it produces zinc fumes which are hazardous. You MUST have proper ventilation/extraction. The laser vaporizes the zinc coating, which can cause porosity if not managed. Pre-cleaning the weld zone helps.
What is the warranty?
Most factories offer 2-year warranty on the laser source, 1 year on other components. Extended warranties (3-5 years) are sometimes available. IPG LightWELD offers similar terms but with local service.
Can I weld dissimilar metals?
Laser welding is excellent for joining dissimilar metals like stainless to carbon steel, or copper to steel. The fast cooling rate and minimal heat input reduce intermetallic compound formation. Parameters need adjustment for each combination.
What is the maximum weld penetration?
1500W: 3-4mm on steel. 2000W: 4-5mm. 3000W: 6-8mm. Penetration depends on material, speed, and focus. For thicker work, multi-pass welding or edge preparation (bevel) may be needed.
Is fiber laser better than CO2?
For metal welding, yes. Fiber lasers (1064nm) are absorbed much better by metals than CO2 lasers (10600nm). Fiber lasers are also more efficient, compact, and require less maintenance. CO2 is better for non-metals like wood and acrylic.
Can I use it outdoors?
Air-cooled units can be used outdoors with proper eye safety enclosures. However, wind can blow away shielding gas, causing poor weld quality. Water-cooled units are less portable. For mobile work, 1500W air-cooled is recommended.
How do I maintain the machine?
Daily: Check protective lens for spatter. Weekly: Clean optics with lens wipes and alcohol. Monthly: Check gas lines, water coolant level (if applicable). Yearly: Factory calibration recommended but often not required.
