Titanium Welder Guide

Titanium is one of the hardest metals to weld. High strength-to-weight ratio makes it essential for aerospace and medical, but welding it requires precision.

Why Titanium Welding is Challenging

Oxidation

Titanium rapidly absorbs oxygen above 500°F, causing brittleness

Contamination

Even fingerprints can contaminate the weld zone

Heat Sensitivity

Too much heat causes alpha case (hard, brittle surface layer)

Shielding

Requires extensive argon shielding during AND after welding

The Key Rule:

Never let hot titanium touch air. The weld and heat-affected zone must be shielded with argon until cooled below 500°F (260°C). This is why TIG welders use trailing shields, and why laser's low heat input is advantageous.

Why Laser is Ideal for Titanium

Low Heat Input

Concentrated beam means minimal heat spread. Less alpha case, less distortion.

Easier Shielding

Small weld zone cools fast. Localized argon is often sufficient.

Fast Cooling

Rapid solidification reduces oxygen absorption time.
