Welding With a Laser

Laser welding is changing how people weld. Faster, cleaner, and easier to learn than traditional methods. Here's how it works.

How Laser Welding Works

A laser welder focuses a beam of infrared light (1064nm wavelength) into a tiny spot on the metal. This concentrated energy heats the metal to its melting point, creating a molten pool that fuses the pieces together. As you move the laser along the joint, the metal solidifies behind it, forming a continuous weld.

1

Focus

Laser beam is focused to a tiny spot (0.2-4mm)

2

Heat

Concentrated energy melts metal at the joint

3

Fuse

Molten pool flows together and fuses

4

Cool

Metal solidifies into strong welded joint

Why Weld With a Laser?

Speed

5-10x faster than TIG welding for same quality

Low Heat

Minimal distortion, less warping

Easy to Learn

No arc starting skills, straightforward operation

Clean Welds

Little to no spatter, minimal cleanup

Precision

Narrow heat zone, accurate weld placement

Versatility

Works on steel, stainless, aluminum, titanium

Getting Started

What You Need:

  • ✓ Handheld fiber laser welder (1000-1500W recommended)
  • ✓ Argon shielding gas
  • ✓ Laser safety glasses (OD6+ at 1064nm)
  • ✓ Welding filler wire (optional but recommended)
  • ✓ 220V power outlet

Learning Curve:

  • • 1 hour: Basic operation and safety
  • • 1-2 days: Confident on thin sheet metal
  • • 1 week: Competent on most applications
  • • 1 month: Expert-level results

Much faster to learn than TIG welding!
