Laser Welding Titanium:
The Complete Guide

Titanium is notoriously difficult to weld due to its extreme reactivity with oxygen. Laser welding solves this problem — if you get the parameters right.

Why Titanium is Challenging to Weld

⚠️ Oxygen Contamination

Titanium absorbs oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen at temperatures above 500°C (932°F). This causes embrittlement — the weld becomes hard but cracks easily. The telltale sign: blue, purple, or gray discoloration instead of bright silver.

❌ Problems with TIG Welding

  • • Requires large trailing gas shield
  • • Heat-affected zone (HAZ) is large
  • • Slow process = more exposure time
  • • Operator skill greatly affects quality

✅ Benefits of Laser Welding

  • • Minimal HAZ (focused heat input)
  • • Fast welding = less contamination risk
  • • Easier gas shielding (smaller area)
  • • Consistent, repeatable results

Where Titanium Laser Welding is Used

Aerospace

Engine components, airframe parts, fasteners. Ti-6Al-4V alloy is industry standard.

Medical Implants

Hip/knee replacements, dental implants, surgical instruments. Biocompatibility is critical.

High-End Bicycles

Premium bike frames (Moots, Litespeed). Customers pay $5,000+ for clean welds.

CP Titanium (Grade 2)1.0-2.0 mm1200-1500W10-18 mm/sArgon (20-25 L/min)

💡 Pro Tip: Back Purging

For critical welds (aerospace/medical), always use back purging — flood argon on the backside of the weld to prevent oxidation from both directions. Target <50 ppm oxygen in the purge atmosphere.
