Laser Welding Safety:
What You MUST Know
Handheld laser welders use Class 4 lasers — the most dangerous category. One moment of carelessness can cause permanent blindness. This guide covers everything you need to operate safely.
⚠️ Class 4 Laser Warning
Fiber lasers (1064nm) produce invisible infrared light that can damage eyes instantly from direct beams AND reflections. You cannot see it coming. Always wear proper eye protection.
Eye Protection (MANDATORY)
Required Specs for 1064nm Fiber Lasers:
- Wavelength: Must cover 1064nm (some cover 800-1100nm range)
- OD Rating: Minimum OD5+, recommended OD6+
- VLT (Visible Light Transmission): 30-50% for comfortable working
- Certification: CE certified, ideally ANSI Z87.1 compliant
✅ Good Choices
- • Dedicated 1064nm laser safety glasses (OD6+)
- • Full-coverage goggles with side shields
- • Prescription inserts available
❌ Dangerous Mistakes
- • Regular sunglasses (ZERO protection)
- • CO2 laser glasses (wrong wavelength!)
- • Shade 5 welding helmets (blocks wrong spectrum)
Work Area Enclosure
Even with safety glasses, everyone in the room must be protected from stray reflections. The safest approach is a dedicated welding enclosure:
Enclosure Options (by budget):
$200-500. Hang around the work area. Must be rated for 1064nm.
$1,000-2,000. Foldable aluminum frame with curtains. Good for job shops.
$5,000+. Enclosed box with interlock. Required for Class 1 certification (like IPG LightWELD).
Fume Extraction & Ventilation
Laser welding vaporizes metal, creating fine particulate matter and potentially toxic fumes (especially with galvanized, painted, or coated materials).
⚠️ High-Risk Materials:
- • Galvanized Steel: Releases zinc fumes (can cause "metal fume fever")
- • Painted/Coated Surfaces: May release toxic compounds
- • Stainless Steel: Chromium fumes (carcinogenic with long-term exposure)
Recommendation: Use a fume extraction system with HEPA + activated carbon filters, or work in a well-ventilated area with outdoor exhaust.
Pre-Operation Safety Checklist
- All personnel wearing OD6+ 1064nm safety glasses
- Work area enclosed with laser safety curtains/booth
- Fume extraction system running
- Reflective surfaces removed or covered
- Fire extinguisher accessible
- "Laser In Use" warning sign posted
- Emergency stop button tested
